37 complaints filed over  unpaid wages

 THIRTY-SEVEN complaints related to non-payment of wages were registered last  year by one of the country's largest trade uions.  

The Bahrain Free Labour Union Federation (BFLUF) has launched investigations  into the allegations, which also include companies in the private sector not  adhering to the terms of employment contracts. "In most cases, the workers in the private sector were not aware of their job  contracts or did not receive their salaries on time," said BFLUF vice-president  Bassem Kuwaitan.  

"Last year, there were some cases of work site injuries, including fatal  accidents." "We have asked those employers to educate their workers on safety measures  and provide them with proper equipment."   He said they also received complaints from women, who claimed their employers  refused to give them the 60-day maternity leave, while some said they were  forced to sign contracts that stated they could not have maternity leave.   "We continue to encourage workers to join our trade union and register their  complaints," he added.
